On Scenic Drive, we’ve seen or experienced:

  • Arson (3x)
  • Assault
  • Drownings (2x)
  • Theft (signs – both traffic and political) – repeatedly
  • Theft – smash and grab – repeatedly
  • Theft – water pumps
  • Parking on the Active Roadway – particularly at Houda Point
  • Stopping on the Wrong Side of the Active Roadway - ditto
  • Reckless Driving and Speeding – both in general and with pedestrians present
  • Drunk Driving – County officials have referred to Scenic Drive as “DUI Drive”
  • Vehicles Running Off the Road – multiple instances
  • Littering – from hundreds of cigarette butts to dumping of large objects and piles of debris; lots of syringes
  • Defacing of Public and Private Property – including graffiti
  • Illegal Trail Blazing
  • Altercations – due to traffic flow disputes

And now there is no or significantly reduced cell service, due to the relocation of the cell tower from Trinidad Head

  • What was generally 3-4 bars of 4G service is now 0-2 (at best) bars of LTE
  • This is insufficient for phone calls from many parts of Scenic Drive, including high-use areas around Houda Point, Luffenholtz Beach and Baker Beach.
  • If you are concerned about safety risks, please let us know on our Contact Us page!

Community Meeting on Scenic Drive Safety- November 10 Summary

Illegal dumping, camping, drug use and overnight parking overnight parking along Scenic Drive have been a cause of concern for the Trinidad Coastal Land Trust as well as neighbors and visitors wanting to safely enjoy beach access. Help be a part of the solution by joining with other community members for a dialogue with the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department on how to work together to improve safety along Scenic Drive. This community meeting was held via Zoom on Tuesday, November 10.

Undersherriff Justin Braud joined the conversation to listen to community concerns and share how the Sheriff's Problem Oriented Policing Program approach can be helpful in developing  strategies to address community issues like dumping, illegal camping and drug use. Problem Oriented Policing is a proactive approach to identifying and targeting problems that contribute to crime, disorder and other community issues.
